Burning Permits
Our Departments & Services / Fire Department / Burning Permits

DeWitt Charter Township allows open burning through a written permit process. The permit must be obtained prior to any initial burning. Permits are available at both fire stations and the Township Hall Clerk's Office.

Open burning is permitted from sunrise to sunset. The only items allowed to be burned are brush (tree limbs, branches, twigs, yard debris) and leaves. All other materials are prohibited.

There are two categories of open burning permits: annual and seasonal. Annual permits are issued to owners of property that is zoned Agricultural with 2 acres or more. Residents with annual permits may activate their permits year round. Seasonal permits are issued to property owners in areas zoned Agricultural with less than 2 acres or zoned Residential with the following designations: R-1, R-2, R-3, R-4, R-5, and R-6. The Looking Glass Pines subdivision is prohibited from burning at any time. Residents with seasonal permits may activate their permits from October 1st through April 30th. Recreational campfires may be activated year round by either permit category.

Brush piles may not be any larger than 5’x5’x3’ and must be at least 50’ from any structure. Campfires of 3’x3’x2’ or smaller must be at least 25’ from any structure. All fires must be attended at all times by an adult and must be completely extinguished when not attended.
