Our friend and colleague, Sergeant Bill Darnell died of complications from Covid-19 on November 4, 2020. Bill served more than 15 years with the DeWitt Charter Township Police Department.
Bill was a dedicated husband, father and public servant. Family meant everything to Bill. He coached his children's soccer, flag football, and football teams and served as a coach and board member for Grand Ledge Area Youth Football. He loved to plan family vacations and was always at the center of whatever fun was going on.
Sgt. Darnell was given the “Beyond the Call of Duty” award in 2018.
In 2009, Bill was named a National Association of Police Organizations Top Cop and traveled to the White House with his family to receive the award. The day he met President Barack Obama, Vice-President Joe Biden, and Attorney General Eric Holder was one of the high points of his life.
The DeWitt Charter Township Police Department holds in the highest regards, the memory of Gary N. Priess, whose life was taken in the line of duty on January 25, 2000. He was 43 years old and an 18-year veteran of the DeWitt Charter Township Police Department. Gary was killed after being struck by a passing tractor-trailer during a routine traffic stop on U.S.-127.
Gary was a dedicated husband and a loving father. He was involved in his community through the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. Gary also enjoyed coaching his daughter's youth basketball team.
