[ARCHIVED] Winter Property Taxes

Real and personal property taxes are payable from December 1, and are due on Tuesday, February 14, 2022. Drain, streetlight, and other special assessments are included on the winter bill.

Tax payments are collected at DeWitt Charter Township through February 28, 2022.  Thereafter, outstanding tax balances are turned over to the Clinton County Treasurer in St. Johns for collection. Once taxes are turned over to the County, they must be paid directly to the County Treasurer, as statute prohibits collecting taxes in the Township office after February 28. We understand sometimes things happen, and offer these suggestions to minimize the consequences and extra expense when taxes can’t be paid on time.

Partial payments are accepted. Paying down the balance will reduce interest charges along the way.

Pay taxes before sewer services.  It is to the property owner’s advantage to settle the tax bill first, and avoid setting the foreclosure process in motion. Outstanding sewer services ultimately become a lien on the property and are turned over to taxes at a later date.

Plan now. Residents finding themselves in a housing crisis can call Capital Area Community Services at 989-224-6702, or visit www.cacs-inc.org/services/financial-literacy for assistance and direction.

Taxpayers have an obligation to pay property taxes. Failure to receive a tax bill does not relieve the responsibility for payment, nor constitutes cause for cancellation of penalty or interest if the tax becomes delinquent.
