Homeowner Tips
As homeowners begin to clean and organize our homes. Mechanical rooms and basements can be a great place to store seasonal items, however there are a few things you as a homeowner need to keep in mind if you are utilizing this space for storage.
- Clearance for fuel burning appliances: Make sure your hot water heater and air handler have the proper clearance areas around them for fresh air intake. Consult your owner’s manual or do a quick search on your unit to find the proper distance. This distance is typically 18’ to 24’.
- Storage of combustible material: Make sure flammable items are away from fuel burning appliances and that they are not stacked in a manner that they could fall and become a safety hazard.
- Blocking of vents: Many basements and crawl spaces in older homes have vents to help with air flow. Make sure when you are stacking items in your basement these vents are not blocked and can function properly.
