August 2nd Primary Election

The August 2^nd State Primary Election is nearly upon us. Voters will be headed to the polling location indicated on their Voter Information Card. New Voter Information Cards were recently mailed to all registered voters in DeWitt Township. If you would like to confirm that you are registered to vote you can go to the Secretary of State’s website.

Should voters prefer to vote absentee, rather than going to the polls, an application for an Absentee Voter Ballot can be found here. Absentee Voter Ballots will be issued following the signature and residency verification process. Completed ballots can be returned to the drop box next to the drive at the DeWitt Township Hall, in-person at the Clerk’s Office, or by regular mail.

Homeowner Tips

As homeowners begin to clean and organize our homes. Mechanical rooms and basements can be a great place to store seasonal items, however there are a few things you as a homeowner need to keep in mind if you are utilizing this space for storage.

Clearance for fuel burning appliances: Make sure your hot water heater and air handler have the proper clearance areas around them for fresh air intake. Consult your owner’s manual or do a quick search on your unit to find the proper distance. This distance is typically 18’ to 24’.
Storage of combustible material: Make sure flammable items are away from fuel burning appliances and that they are not stacked in a manner that they could fall and become a safety hazard.
Blocking of vents: Many basements and crawl spaces in older homes have vents to help with air flow. Make sure when you are stacking items in your basement these vents are not blocked and can function properly.

Tommy Moose Donation

The DeWitt Township Fire Department would like to thank the DeWitt Moose Lodge 2291 for providing “Tommy Moose” stuffed animals to our First Responders. The “Tommy Moose” program aids in helping children overcome fears and anxiety during times of stress. “Tommy Moose” is presented to children in various traumatic situations and events. “Tommy Moose” helps to personify happiness, safety, and security.

Summer Taxes

2022 real and personal property tax statements are mailed July 1st. Many residents’ taxes are handled through escrow companies and they will not receive the bill directly; however, all property owners’ current and historical tax data is available online at www.dewitttownship.org. If you are expecting a tax bill and do not receive it by July 15th, please call the Treasurer’s Office for a copy. Failure to receive a tax bill does not relieve the responsibility for payment, nor constitute cause for cancellation of penalty and interest if the tax becomes delinquent.

Summer Tax Deferment

Qualifying residents can defer payment of the summer tax bill to later in the year, or February 14th, 2023, winter tax deadline. Tax deferments are available for residents with a total annual household income of less than $40,000 and meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

62 years or older person
Paraplegic, hemiplegic, or quadriplegic person
Eligible service person, eligible veteran, eligible widow or widower

ACH Autopay for Taxes

Township residents interested in ACH Autopay for the 2022 tax season (summer and winter), can download a form from the Township's website, under Documents and Forms, or by calling the Treasurer’s Office at 517-668-1411. ACH Autopay is a free service for Township residents and remains in effect for just one tax season (summer and winter).
