August 2nd Primary Election

Polls will be open from 7 AM to 8 PM on Tuesday, August 2nd for in person voting on Election Day. It is important to know that Michigan law regarding primary ballots requires voters to cast votes for only one party’s candidates. Votes for candidates in multiple parties on the same ballot will not be counted.

If you need to register to vote, and are eligible, go to Michigan.gov/vote. Registration can also be done at your local clerk’s office through 8 PM on Election Day.

The Michigan Voter Information Center at Michigan.gov/vote provides important information for voters ahead of Election Day, including a sample ballot, information about how to use voting equipment and how to contact your local clerk.

HVAC System Maintenance

Walking into a nice cool home after working in your yard under the hot summer sun is one of the best feelings in the world! Those feelings are not possible without our home heating and cooling systems operating efficiently and effectively. Here are a few simple tips to help ensure those systems continue to run for years to come:

  • Changing filters plays a major role in the efficiency and life span of your HVAC system. Standard filters should be changed every month and specialty filters should be changed per the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Cleaning returns and supply registers is a simple way to help your system run smooth. Floor covers typically can be pulled up and cleaned with warm soapy water. Supply covers are typically fastened in the wall with simple Phillips head screws. Once the screws are removed, the covers should be washed with warm soapy water and reinstalled.
  • Your systems should still be serviced and inspected by a licensed professional every three to five years. Servicing could include inspecting for faulty wiring, checking refrigerant levels, testing for leaks, cleaning belts and even calibrating your thermostat.

These tips are simple preventive maintenance options for homeowners and can help save you from a costly HVAC repair bill, as well as increase the efficiency and life span of your HVAC system. For more tips or resources, please contact your DeWitt Township Building Department.

2022 Summer Property Tax Season:

Summer real and personal property tax statements were mailed earlier in July, and are due in full on September 14, 2022.

Didn't receive your summer property tax bill?

If a bill was not received, and you believe it should have been, visit the Township’s website to view or print your bill. Or call the Treasurer’s office, and they will be happy to mail you a copy. Failure to receive a tax bill does not relieve the responsibility for payment, nor constitute cause for cancellation of penalty and interest if the tax becomes delinquent.

If you have a mortgage and maintain an escrow account, estimated taxes are likely included with your monthly mortgage payment. Therefore, the tax bill is sent to the mortgage company for handling.

Summer Tax Deferment

Qualifying residents may be eligible to defer payment of summer taxes. Tax deferments are available to residents with a total annual household income of less than $40,000 and who meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

  • 62 years or older person
  • Paraplegic, hemiplegic, or quadriplegic person
  • Eligible service person, eligible veteran, eligible widow or widower
  • Blind person
  • Totally and permanently disabled person

This deferment is for a homeowner's principal residence only. Form 471-Application for Deferment of Summer Taxes can be requested from the Treasurer’s Office or downloaded from the Township’s website. Residents can file the form as an intent to defer on or before September 14, 2022.
