Handgun Registrations/Purchase Permits
Handgun Registration Law changed 3/28/13 - you no longer have to be a Township resident to come to the Police Department and request a purchase permit. Anyone in the WHOLE STATE OF MICHIGAN can come her to request a purchase permit. However, they have to follow through and drop off the State form here if they get it here. If a citizen wants to buy a handgun from a Federally Licensed Dealer, they don't need a purchase permit. They just have to present their valid Michigan driver's license to the dealer. Private sales or citizens going to a gun show may want (or need) to get a purchase permit at the police station. Purchase permits can be requested between 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, except on holidays.
Residents who legally obtain a handgun through the use of a pre-issued Permit to Purchase or with a current Concealed Pistol License (CPL) may register their new handgun at the Police Department at no charge. You are no longer required by State law to bring the handgun you purchased to the police station for inspection.
The Police Department owns a McGruff costume, and regularly provides McGruff appearances for community events. If you have an event and would like to include McGruff, please contact the administrative office to make your request.
